HIST: newly-IND EC claimed, 1832, mere 3 yr B4 Darwin's visit on Beagle. During 19th & early 20th Cs, Islas inhabited by very few settlers & used as penal colony, last closing in 1959 when Islas declared national PK. Galapagos subsequently listed as World Heritage Site in 1978.

Many yr later Thomas Nickerson, Essex cabin boy, returned > Charles Isla finding blk wasteland: "neir trees, shrubbery, nor grass have since appeared." SUM: extinction of some originally species
September 1835, 2nd HMS Beagle voyage brought Charles Darwin > Charles Isla.
NOTE 1: @ prison colony SEE “.pdf” Darwin told tortoises differed in shell shape from isla > isla, but since NOT obvious on islands Darwin visited, did NOT collecting shells. Darwin DID industriously collected all animals, plants, insects & reptiles, & speculated -- about finding "from future comparison > what district or 'CNTR of creation' organized beings of archipelago must be attached."
